Foreign heads of state have visited Chengdu quite often in the past years, such as British Prime Minister David Cameron, US vice president Joe Biden, US first lady Michelle Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Governor General of Canada David Johnston, and Governor General of Australia Quentin Bryce, etc. These high prof ile visitors came because of the fact that Chengdu is becoming an economic plateau in western China, which oversees not only the entire west China market, but also and possibly China’s new future.
In recent years, Chengdu has involved in foreign cultural exchange in an unprecedentedly dynamic manner by launching 300 foreign cultural exchange programs and arranging visits to more than 40 countries and regions with a total of 5000 people participating. Through hosting large international cultural events, such as French Fireworks Festival, French Film Panorama, and the First High-level Academic Forum for Asian Culture and Art Circles, as well as “Cultural Week” in Hongkong, Macao, Japan, Korea, Europe and US, Chengdu smartly popularizes local cultural products and itself while engaging in foreign cultural exchanges and continues to broaden the channel of cultural communication.
