How Chengdu people spend their day

Around 10 o’clock every morning, the cultural center at Tianfu Street in Wenjiang district starts to get crowded and busy with resident s f rom nearby who come for their favor ite cultural activities. Some take calligraphy and rehearsal rooms, some go to the library, others choose the electronic reading room and lecture hall. And even when people clear out after 4 o’clock in the afternoon, the cultural center is only getting ready for more visitors—pupi ls coming to do homework in the library and white-collar workers heading straight for the gym. At night, finishing a long day in the workshop, young workers from nearby factories would gather together in Young Workers Cultural Club on the third f loor of the cultural center for a change. Making it possible for people of different age and social status to enjoy basic cultural service is the very goal the cultural center has been founded to achieve.

80km east from the cultural center is Longan Village at Damian Street in Longquanyi district, where Li Huiqin, a local farmer, is located. May and June are Li’s busiest months of a year when loquats ripen. Picking loquats in the garden contracted by her would be the only thing Li does from dawn to dusk. When she f inishes the job late in the afternoon, Li would rush to the cultural activity room 10 minutes away from her house and take pipa (a traditional Chinese instrument) lessons given by professional instructors. Learning playing pipa in free time has become Li’s biggest hobby. And the saying of “picking pipa (Chinese for loquat) in the morning, playing pipa in the afternoon” best depicts the day of local farmers.
