Extend cultural memory of the city

In March 2013, among the nationalgifts sent away when president Xi Jinping and first lady Peng Liyuan visited Women and Development Foundation in Tanzania, a Sichuan brocade featuring giant panda raised public attention on the traditional craftsmanship of Sichuan embroidery. As one of the four great embroideries of China and among the f irst batch of intangible culture projects protected at national level of Chengdu, Sichuan embroidery has a history of more than 3000 years and is famous for exquisite craftsmanship and unique style. In recent years, Chengdu municipality constantly spoke of the importance of intangible cultural heritage protection, which helped craftsmanship as ancient as Sichuan embroidery maintain their glory till this day.

The spectacular intangible cultural heritage of Chengdu came from its profound history. In the eyes of Chengdu people, protecting intangible cultural her itage does not only mean inheriting tradit ions f rom ancestors, but also preserving the cultural gens of the city. As urban construction expands under a constantly growing economy, Chengdu is strengthening its measures in protecting intangible cultural heritage accordingly. With the help of protection catalogue, traditional craftsmanship, ancient customs and local art that ref lect unique characteristics of various regions are able to pass on in the context of modernization and globalization.

By September 2014, 116 projects and 244 inheritors of Chengdu have been included in the projection catalogue of intangible cultural heritage, 19 of which have been recognized as national model intangible cultural heritage projects, such as Sichuan embroidery and brocade, lacquer art, Dujiangyan waterreleasing festival, Zhumahaozi chantey, Taoist music, fire dragon dance in Huanglongxi town, Sichuan zhuqin (bamboo dulcimer), Sichuan qingyin (pure tone), Jinqianban (bamboo clappers with coins inserted), Sichuan dulcimer, Xin fan palm fiber weaving, Chengdu sugar painting, Shuijingfang traditional brewing technique, production of Pixian spicy broad bean paste, Sichuan style bonsai skill, bamboo weaving porcelain, Chengdu silver thread artwork, and Chengdu traditional Chinese medicine processing. 15 people including Xiao Ting and Chen Qiaoru (Sichuan opera), Zhang Yonggui (Sichuan zhuqin), Cheng Yongling (Sichuan qinyin), Zou Zhongxin (late) and Zhang Xu ( Jinqianban), Hao Shuping (Sichuan embroidery), Ye Yongzhou and Liu Chenxi (contexture of Sichuan brocade), Song Xiping and Yin Liping (lacquer art), Fan Deran (Chengdu sugar painting), Lai Dengyi (Shuijingfang traditional brewing technique), Lei Dingcheng (production of Pixian spicy broad bean paste), Dao An (Chengdu silver thread artwork) have been nominated as national model inheritors of
intangible cultural heritage. In addition, Chengdu also has 3 intangible cultural heritage bases and 52 intangible cultural heritage learning institutes.

Moreover, people in Chengdu are par t icularly proud of the recognit ion of Chinese guqin art represented by Sichuan style guqin by UNESCO as Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2003 and the incorporat ion of China tradit ional si lk fabr ic weaving including Sichuan brocade into Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO in 2010.
