Spring festival is the most important traditional holiday in Chinese culture. Compared with other places in China, people in Chengdu celebrate this traditional holiday with unique customs. For instance, on the f irst day of spring festival, families would go to the Wuhou Shrine in the south of Chengdu to pray because according to ancient Chinese myth the god of joy and good luck lives in the south, so became the tradition of “visiting the god of joy”. On the seventh day, people would go to Du Fu Thatched Cottage in the west of Chengdu to commemorate the great poet Du Fu by participating in various poetry related activities.

The celebration of water-releasing festival in Dujiangyan is another important custom in Chengdu. On Tomb-sweeping Day every year, Chengdu people would gather in Dujiangyan and hold large ritual activities to celebrate the completion of Dujiangyan Irrigation System and commemorate Li Bing. In 256 B.C., Li Bing and his son directed the construction of Dujiangyan Irrigation System--an epic project that eliminated floods from Minjiang River and made Chengdu plains the land of abundance. Such custom ref lects people’s gratitude for their ancestors and mother land. The water-releasing festival is also one of the f irst batch of intangible cultural heritage projects incorporated in national protection catalogue.

Similar customs are also practiced in Chengdu Flower Fair in Qingyang Palace, Wangcong Temple Singing Contest in Pixian county, Fire Dragon Fest ival in Shuangliu county⋯⋯As time goes by, Chengdu people pass on their tradition and diversified regional culture, for which, as they firmly believe, are the source for sustainable development of the city.

On the World Day for Cultural Diversity in Shanghai Expo Park May 21, 2010, Irina Bokova, director general of UNESCO, wrote: “I like Chengdu’s her itage and tradition very much, such as the magical face changing performance, and the fabulous shadow puppet play, tea ceremony and wine ceremony. Thank you, Chengdu!”
