By September 2014, Chengdu has a total of 113 museums, including 44 state-owned and industry museums and 69 private museums. The fact that Chengdu has so many museums is largely a result of its
profound culture and historic remains, and highly popularized civil collection business (there are over 30,000 professional relic collectors in Chengdu). Same as hi-tech and major industrial projects, Chengdu government has issued a number of policies to catalyze the growth of museums, including laying down development plans, land and taxation incentives, and offering an annual f inancial support of over RMB 10 million. It is expected that by 2015, Chengdu will establish more than 100 private museums and become China’s model city of private museum development.

As model state-owned museums in Chengdu, Wuhou Shrine and Du Fu Thatched Cottage are known to the world as the holy land of the Three Kingdoms period and the center of poetry culture, which both are listed in the f irst batch of major historical and cultural sites protected at national level and national first-class museums. Established less than a decade ago, Chengdu Jinsha Site Museum quickly earned its popularity both home and abroad and was listed in the f irst batch of national archaeological site parks. As the first national museum in Sichuan province, China Shadow Puppet Play Museum in Chengdu has a massive collection of over 200,000 shadow f igures and over 10,000 puppets and is considered the largest museum in the world of such category of collection. Located in the west of Tianfu Square, the ongoing construction of New Chengdu Museum is considered to be the biggest cultural project ever since the founding of PRC for a massive investment of RMB 1 billion. It shall become the largest city museum in southwest China upon completion.
